Description

IDENTIFYING AND ADDRESSING HEMP AND IEMI THREATS

A COMPREHENSIVE COURSE TAUGHT BY EMP EXPERT

DR. WILLIAM A. RADASKY, Ph.D., P.E., IEEE LIFE FELLOW

GAIN THE KNOWLEDGE TO BETTER PROTECT AGAINST HEMP/IEMI THREATS.

This workshop will cover two severe electromagnetic threats that provide a serious challenge to the operation of commercial equipment and systems embedded in the critical infrastructures. These include:

  • High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) Produced by the Detonation of a Nuclear Device in Space
  • Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) Produced by Nearby Criminals or Terrorists Using New-technology Electromagnetic Weapons

The workshop will review the electromagnetic characteristics of each threat (including both the radiated and conducted waveforms), a summary of how these electromagnetic fields can create upsets and damage to unprotected equipment, and how equipment and systems can be protected from each of these threats.

While several portions of the workshop will inform the attendees of the technical aspects of the threat and their coupling into electronics, the workshop will focus primarily on data and the electric grid as opposed to purely theoretical aspects of these phenomena.

There are six main topics to be discussed over the two-day workshop, which will be further subdivided into smaller modules.

Classroom Topics Include:

  • HEMP Environments and Coupling
  • HEMP Susceptibilities and Testing
  • IEMI Environments and Coupling
  • IEMI Susceptibilities and Testing
  • International Standards Activity in HEMP/IEMI
  • HEMP/IEMI Protection Methods
